13 Million Children in America are at risk of hunger…
Helping Them is a Piece of Cake!
Kids from preschool to college age joined Team Kids to take a bite out of childhood hunger. What a partnership! City hall, the police and firefighters, parks and recreation, and schools all join with a common mission: to lend a hand to those in need. Once children learned about the Great American Bake Sale, everyone wanted to participate. All it took was inviting kids of all ages to run a bake sale and educate the community about childhood hunger in our country. Held over Martin Luther King weekend, 100% of the proceeds were donated to Share Our Strength, a national anti-hunger organization working to provide sustainable resources to the 14 million children who are hungry in the United States. College interns, high school and middle school leaders helped get information out to newspapers and put flyers in back packs of 15,000 school age children. Over the weekend honoring Dr. King, 200 bake sales were run by kids all over the city, and each group who faxed bake sale details to the Irvine Police Department had a visit from an on duty police officer and fire crew expressing thanks for their important actions. Middle and high school students made posters and decorations for a celebration held at City Hall where $6,000 was contributed from youth to this important cause.

Team Kids Challenge: The Team Kids challenge is a month long program broken down into four individual weeks of activities, each with its own goal. The students are presented the program and its challenge of meeting the goals for each of the four weeks by a team of role models, such as, fire fighters, police, Team Kids mentors and high school and college interns. The students spend the first three weeks collecting toys, books, clothes, food, and animal supplies to be donated to local service agencies. A school wide carnival takes place during the fourth week. The entire student body and the school participate in the Team Kids Challenge; however, the oldest two grades of students are invited to give up their lunch period 1-2 times weekly, throughout the program, to plan and host the carnival. All the tickets the students sell raises money for pediatric cancer research.
